The book of Acts is more than a history of the beginning of the church. It is a revelation of the church’s identity and purpose as shaped by the gospel of the risen and now reigning Lord Jesus Christ.
At the conclusion of His earthly ministry, Jesus promised that His Spirit-empowered disciples would bear witness to Him to the ends of the earth. In fact, the entire message of the book of Acts is captured by Jesus in Acts 1:8: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Last fall, in part one of our Acts series, we studied Jesus’ glorious ascension to heaven, His pouring out of the Holy Spirit upon his disciples, and the church’s birth. In part two this spring, we’ll resume in Acts 8 and discover how the Lord Jesus used persecution to scatter His church from Jerusalem to surrounding regions. As the persecuted believers settled into new regions and began their lives, more churches were started, and the first missionaries were sent.
In the same way as our brothers and sisters in the early church, we’ll be reminded of Christ’s Lordship and His assurance that we need not fear when facing hostile opposition. My hope is that you will find encouragement from the early church’s scattering and sending as we seek to faithfully fulfill Christ’s mission in our generation right here in Clemson.
Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:00 or 11:00 AM in the spring of 2023 for our series, “Christ’s Reign and the Church’s Sending: A Study of Acts 8-19.”
