The Reward of Secret Giving

Let your light shine before others. (Matthew 5:16)

With these words, Christ commands his followers to publicly display His light through their good works so that the world may see and glorify the Father in heaven.

Is Jesus saying we should ensure our good works are known by others?

Should we post our good deeds on social media?

Should we bring them up in conversation?

What exactly does Jesus mean, and not mean, in this exhortation? Jesus answers these questions in Matthew 6:1-4 as he continues his sermon on the Mount.

Read: Matthew 6:1-4

This Sunday, Pastor Jason will teach from Matthew 6 showing how followers of Jesus are to fulfill good works — specifically giving to the needy — for the glory of God.

We will examine the motivation behind our giving, and be challenged to give quietly in secret and without want of man’s praise. We will be presented with a sobering choice: receive our reward now from man or, infinitely better, wait for our Father’s promised reward in heaven.

Should our good works be seen, may they lead others to give glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16), and may our greatest treasure be Christ alone.

Pray:

Pray that God would grant you faith to believe He is an all-seeing God.

Pray for a desire for His glory above the praise of man and above any earthly reward.

Pray that God would convict you of ways you have sought the praise of man over the glory of God, and pray that He would lead you in gracious repentance.

Pray that God would give you eyes to see opportunities around you each day to serve Him through serving others.

Pray that God would be glorified in your obedience, whether seen or unseen, and that your faith would grow as you live for His glory alone.
